NEW DELHI: Delhi has become the 11th state to ratify the amended Central Motor Vehicle Act, defining the penalties for compoundable offence and officers who can take the fine on the spot. Delhi has gone ahead with notifying the maximum fines as prescribed in the amended MV law, unlike many other states.
The other states that have notified the penalties for spot fines (compounding offences) and designated officers to collect them include Gujarat, Odisha, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Telanagana, Punjab and Assam. In several cases, the states have fixed their own fines for traffic offences using the MV Act provisions, which provides for the minimum and maximum fine a state can notify.
"Delhi's move to fix the maximum fine may set an example for other states that are yet to notify the norm. We expect that the capital will get more CCTV cameras and use technology for enforcement of the rules. The concern of drivers about corruption on road can also be addressed " said a central government official.
