Porsche has a way for owners to make their 911 truly one of a kind.
For 7,500 euros (about $8,400), Porsche's personalization division will now put a giant copy of the owner's fingerprint on the hood. The option, available only in Germany, uses a proprietary method of directly printing graphical elements onto painted body parts.
Eventually, other "customer-specific designs" will be available, the luxury brand said.
"Individuality is very important for Porsche customers. And no design can be more personal than your own fingerprint," Alexander Fabig, Porsche's vice president of individualization and classic, said in a statement. "Porsche is a pioneer in personalization and has developed the direct printing method together with partners. We're especially proud of having developed a completely new product offering based on new technologies."
The direct-printing technology allows for designs that can't be done with conventional painting and is superior to a film application in both look and feel, Porsche said. It works similar to an inkjet printer, applying the paint with a print head that operates automatically and prevents overspray. The hood is removed and painted, then covered with a clear coat and polished to a high-gloss finish before being reinstalled.
Porsche said it processes the customer's biometric data so it can't be used for any unauthorized purposes.
