Vadodara: Water supply to parts of the eastern and southern parts of the city will be partially hit due to work on one of the filtration plants at the Nimeta water treatment facility. Water supply to the affected areas will be curtailed for about a week.
While other work on the water Nimeta water treatment plants had been completed by the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC), the replacement of valves in plant number three at the facility was pending. The civic body is looking to replace 28 valves in various parts of the plant at a cost of around Rs 18lakh.
Work on the replacement of the valves will begin on Friday and is expected to continue for about a week. The VMC, however, has not announced a deadline for completion of work in a public notice announcing the water cut.
The water cut, sources said, may be only for about five minutes a day. But the affected areas will also be getting water with low pressure. A population of around seven lakh people is likely to be affected.
Water supply to areas under the network of Manjalpur, Kapurai, Tarsali, Jambuva, Makarpura GIDC (new), Nalanda, Panigate and Gajrawadi tanks will be affected due to the work at Nimeta. Apart from these localities under the network of Danteshwar, Makarpura, Somatalav, Sankheda Dashalad and Mahanagar booster tanks will also be affected.
The Nimeta water filtration facility has been marred in a major controversy after it came to light that there were several lacunae in its maintenance. This had led to supply of turbid and yellow coloured water to the southern and eastern parts of the city for several months last year.
The civic body had suspended senior engineers as well as slapped notices to contractors regarding the state of affairs. It had come to light that the design of the plant was faulty and there were serious lapses in its maintenance too. Work had to be taken up on a war footing to fix things at the plant and restart the water supply.
