One held with 200 grams of smuggled gold at Surat airport

Surat: A person travelling from Sharjah was nabbed by the air intelligence unit of the customs department at Surat airport with 200 grams of gold worth Rs 9 lakh on late Wednesday night.
Official sources said that the accused, identified as Sanjay Patel, a resident of Mota Varachha in the city, had arrived at Surat airport in the Surat-Sharjah flight on Wednesday night. Since his movements were suspicious, the sleuths of the air intelligence unit decided to scan his body and luggage.
Upon scanning, it was found that the smuggler had hidden the gold capsule covered with hard chemical sealant in his luggage.
Sources said that Patel had brought the gold to deliver it in Surat. There are many traders in Surat who pay the smugglers handsome amount to bring the contraband from Dubai.
Officials said that Patel was employed as a diamond polisher in a unit, but he had been jobless for the past three months. He was approached by one Kalpesh, who offered him Rs 30,000 for bringing gold from Dubai.
“The accused stayed in Dubai for five days and returned with the smuggled contraband on Wednesday night when he was held at the airport. The gold has been seized by the department and further investigations are going on,” said an official.
