DHARWAD: Retired principal of Porwal College, Sindagi Prof MS Chandakavate on Thursday said that the role essayed by economist Prof DM Nanjundappa in planning and subsequent implementation of a decentralised
economic policy in Karnataka could not be overstated.
Prof Chandakavate delivering a special lecture organised by the department of
economics and Dr DM Nanjundappa Centre for Applied Research in Economics of
Karnatak University , said that the bottom-up approach conceptualised by
Prof Nanjundappa had resulted in the integrated development of the state. “Nanjundappa’s model was adopted after the preceding top-down approach met with limited success in the 1970s,” said Prof Chandakavate.
Nanjundappa distinguished himself by underscoring the human face of development, and the social dimensions of economic policies, he added. “Prof Nanjundappa batted for pro-poor policies, and was committed to social justice. In his capacity as the deputy chairman of the Karnataka State Planning Board, he made significant contributions to the state’s development. Students of economics must imbibe the principles of Prof Nanjundappa,” said Chandakavate.
Prof NG Chachadi, speaking on ‘Financial Inclusion Through
Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana in India’, said that the flagship scheme had not been implemented as it should as a result of which the initiative had not been able to achieve its stated objectives. “Financial inclusion is a prerequisite for inclusive growth. Compared to the work done towards financial inclusion in the pre-reform period, it has not been on a par in the aftermath,” he added.
Chairman of the department of economics Prof PR Biradar, who presided over the event, said that a series of programmes would be held, wherein scholars would be invited to inspire students and instill the ethos that Nanjundappa espoused. “Nanjundappa was not only a good teacher, but he was also a researcher, policymaker, administrator and above all, a great human being,” said Prof Biradar.
Prof BH Nagoor delivered the welcome address, while Sudharshan Dharmar proposed the vote of thanks on Thursday.
