Gujarat police to get 9,000 body cameras

GANDHINAGAR: Gujarat police is set to go high-tech, as minister of state for home Pradipsinh Jadeja announced that the state will soon acquire body cameras, tasers and an anti-drone system for the police.
Replying on the demands of the home department in the assembly, Jadeja said the government is set to acquire 9,000 body-worn cameras which will help police to record altercations and interactions with citizens. He further said that 8,000 such cameras will be given to field officers.
Jadeja said that after the visit of US president Donald Trump, it was decided to get ultra-modern equipment. Gujarat Police will also acquire an anti-drone system to strengthen its air surveillance.
Jadeja said the department has also decided to acquire tasers to control suspects. These devices make the subject unconscious without injuring them. Jadeja said Gujarat will become the first Indian state to acquire tasers. The home department will also acquire 1,000 simcard-enabled cameras for crime detection.
Jadeja said under the Viswas project, 34 district headquarters, six religious places and the Statute of Unity have CCTV networks for traffic management and crime monitoring. He said the government has decided to have a police commissionerate in Gandhinagar and plans to bring in a new law to control anti-social elements.
Senior Congress leader Shailesh Parmar said, “Law and order in the state is deteriorating.” Quoting figures from the National Crime Record Bureau, he said that compared to 2017 there were 18,799 more IPC cases, a 14.6% increase. He said the crime rate in Gujarat was 4.7% in 2018, higher than states like Chhattisgarh (1.9%) and Andhra Pradesh (1%).
He said the crime rates in Gujarat cities was also high. The crime rate in Surat was 5.7% and in Ahmedabad was 5.3%. This was higher than cities such as Lucknow (3.2%), Kolkata (3.6%) and Chennai (3.7%). He said in Ahmedabad city there were 12,381 more IPC cases in 2018 than in 2016, a 75.57% increase. In Surat the increase was 11,322, a 57.06% increase in two years.
