Anti-CAA stir called off temporarily

Coimbatore: The marathon anti–CAA stir organised by Muslim outfits at Athupalam has been called off, albeit temporarily in the wake of simmering tension in the city on Thursday.
The protesters said they are suspending the protest for five days in a bid to diffuse the growing tension in the city. The protesters have dispersed from the makeshift shed at Athupalam Junction. They have been asked not to congregate at the place till next announcement from the Muslim outfit leaders.
The protest commenced on February 19 opposing Citizenship Amendment Act and demanding the state government to pass a resolution against CAA in the assembly. Large number of men and women from Ukkadam, Podanur, Karumbukkadai, Sundarapuram and Athupalam locality were congregating at the protest site everyday where speakers from various political outfits would visit and deliver speeches. A young couple also got their wedding solemnized in the protest site to express solidarity with the protesters.
On Tuesday, the Muslim outfit leaders were summoned by district collector K Rajamani and were asked to withdraw all their protests for a week to bring back normalcy in the city. The outfit functionaries agreed to drop all their protest plans but said they would not give up the anti–CAA protests. However, in the wake of raising tensions, they decided to drop the anti–CAA protests.
