Actor Vijay earned Rs 50 crore for Bigil, Rs 80 crore for Master, say I-T officials

CHENNAI: Searches at actor Vijay’s residence ended on Thursday, Income Tax investigation officials said, adding that they checked his accounts and got details about his remuneration from two of his movies.
“We found that the actor has shown as salary Rs 50 crore from ‘Bigil’, which was a box office hit, and Rs 80 crore from ‘Master’, which is yet to be released. We found that the actor paid taxes for the salaries received for both movies and we have no questions on this,” a senior I-T official told TOI.
The searches started at Vijay’s residence, at the office of AGS Entertainment, which produced ‘Bigil’, and at financier Anbu Cheziyan’s residence on February 5. “Though we have completed the searches, we are yet to complete our examination of the documents and other papers which we seized from various places belonging to the three assessors,” said the official.
A preliminary examination of the documents, however, raised doubts about the investments made by the actor and his family members, he said. “We have started examining the documents and accounts of the actor and his family members. There are questionable investments on which tax will be raised.”
The searches began after the department found a common thread among all the entities following the success of ‘Bigil’ which collected around Rs 300 crore.
“About 38 premises of the [AGS Entertainment] group were covered in the search and survey operation spread over Chennai and Madurai. The highlight of the search is the seizure of unaccounted cash of about Rs 77 crore from hideouts and places at Chennai and Madurai, purportedly belonging to the financier Anbu Cheziyan,” said the official.
As part of the searches, I-T officials went to the shoot of ‘Master’ in Neyveli and took the actor with them. Vijay and his family members were questioned for not less than 20 hours. “Analysis of the accounts available at the office is on. Evidence of actual receipts and expenses, and remuneration paid to artists is under investigation.”
