NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old woman who was being blackmailed by her former lover allegedly committed suicide at her residence in northeast Delhi’s Jagatpuri on Wednesday afternoon. Police have arrested the mother-son duo in connection with the case on Thursday. The accused have been identified as Pankaj Dang and his mother Alka Dang.
According to the cops, Pankaj had created a ruckus at the engagement ceremony of the deceased, which eventually had to be called off because of the claims made by him. Police have also seized the mobile phone of Pankaj and Alka.
Family members of the deceased alleged that the girl had on March 8 written to police informing them about the Pankaj blackmailing her. No action was, however, taken, the kin claimed.
After the victim hanged herself, her mother filed another complaint and a case of abetment to suicide and extortion was registered against Pankaj and his mother.
Police said the victim had come to know that Pankaj was involved in a betting racket and had started distancing herself from him. However, the accused started blackmailing her and troubled her mother. The victim’s family had even given Rs 50,000 to the accused. Pankaj, however, demanded Rs 10 lakh.
According to the police, the mother-son duo also ruined the victim’s engagement ceremony after they reached the venue and created a ruckus. The girl’s mother told the cops that her daughter, who was troubled by the constant blackmailing and the money demands, found no other choice but to hang herself and commit suicide.
