PATNA: With the threat of Covid-19 looming large over the state, some miscreants are now using surgical masks to conceal their identity during the course of crime.
This is exactly what happened at a cake shop near the Mithapur bus stand under the Jakkanpur police station area in
Patna late on Wednesday evening. Unsuspecting criminals wearing face masks entered the shop around 8pm, looted over Rs 15,000 after holding the staff and the owner captive at gunpoint and decamped with the cash on their motorbike.
Both the criminals — Sanu Kumar (21) and Sagar Kumar (22) — were wearing face masks to conceal their identity and hoodwink police. While Sanu barged into the shop posing as a bona fide customer, Sagar stood guard outside to keep a watch on the passers-by. Surprisingly, the Jakkanpur police station is just a stone’s throw from the site of occurrence, but police have no inkling of the incident.
City SP (East) Jitendra Kumar said on Thursday that both the criminals were later arrested with the help of the local people and the looted amount was recovered from their possession. While Sanu, a resident of Postal Park, has criminal antecedent and was earlier arrested in connection with a case lodged with the Kotwali police station, Sagar’s antecedents are being verified.
The City SP said, “The face masks as well as caps, which the robbers were wearing at the time of the incident, were seized. Police also recovered a ‘desi katta’ (countrymade weapon) and a motorbike used in the crime. The novel modus operandi of the robbers was captured in the CCTV camera installed in the shop.”
The SHO of Jakkanpur police station, Mukesh Kumar Verma, said a complaint was lodged against the criminals on the statement of the shop owner, Arjun Kumar. “Since the culprits have already been arrested, the charge sheet against them will be submitted in the court at the earliest,” he added.
