Coimbatore: The city Police have arrested 127 members of several Hindu and Muslim outfits to keep communal flare-ups in check.
Police have also strengthened night patrolling, city police commissioner Sumit Sharan said. “Several anti-CAA and pro-CAA agitations were held in the city in the last few days. Wherever violence was reported, we registered FIRs and are in the process of making arrests,” he told reporters here on Thursday.
“Two people were arrested for throwing a crude bomb at a mosque in Ganapathy. One person arrested for hate speech has been remanded in judicial custody,” the officer said.
“I appeal to all organizations to maintain peace and harmony in Coimbatore. They should not hold any kind of demonstration for one week. The additional director general of police is camping in the city and conducting meetings with both the parties,” Sharan said.
The city police on Wednesday had arrested S Noor Mohammed, a resident of Kurichi, in connection with the attack on district secretary of Hindu Munnani M Anand last week. The accused was produced before the judicial magistrate and lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
Four deputy commissioners of police man the four sub-divisions in the city. While L Balaji Saravanan (law & order) is in charge of the south sub-division, E S Uma (crime) looks after the west sub-division. R Mutharasu (traffic) and S Selvakumar (headquarters) oversee the east and central sub-divisions respectively. The city has 15 law & order police stations. An assistant commissioner each has been deputed for each police sstation to maintain law & order.
