Hunger strike observed to commemorate salt satyagraha
MANGALURU: We the People of India, an organisation of like-minded people, held a daylong hunger strike demanding the withdrawal of NPR on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s Salt Satyagraha near the deputy commissioner’s office here on Thursday.
Former MLA J R Lobo said an attempt is being made to divide people on the basis of religion in the nation. He expressed concern over the increasing prices of essential commodities and lack of employment. “The economy has been affected badly due to the economic slowdown. Industries and agriculture and other sectors are in a state of stagnation, and the development of the nation is at stake,” he said.
Shanthi Prathishtana managing director Mohammed Kunhi said if Mahatma Gandhi could make India independent through satyagraha, the same mode of protest will also help people to reject the central government’s citizenship laws. “Hindus and Muslim in India have been living in harmony after Independence. However, the central government is now making attempts to divide people. Protests are being held at various places across India against NPR, NRC and CAA and it should continue till the fascist ideologies are rooted out from the nation,” he added.
The nation has witnessed the worst economic crisis, he said, and called upon people cutting across all religions to unite against fascist ideologies.
Former mayor K Ashraf, corporators Abdul Latheef, Abdul Rouf, CITU Shramikara Sangha president Willy Wilson, social activist Vidya Dinker, writer A K Kukkila, DYFI district president B K Imthiyaz, SDPI district president Ataulla Jokatte and UNIWEF president Rafiuddin Kudroli were present.
