LUCKNOW: Farmers who have suffered losses given the crop damage due to hailstorm and rains in the state have sought "factual" assessment of the loss each one of them has suffered.
The farmers' body, Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) has written to the chief minister Yogi Adityanath "willing to bring to his notice" that the assessment, at present, is done by the revenue department.
Revenue officers calculate loss based on the input cost per hectare of the land. "This is not a factual assessment," said national spokesperson, BKU, Dharmendra Kumar.
Farmers want a committee be set up to carry out a detailed assessment and which should have on board not only the officers from the revenue department on board but representation from other departments as well like agriculture and horticulture.
It's the agriculture department that has figures related to the production and rate of the crops grown by the farmers. Similarly, horticulture department can work out the loss suffered by fruit and veggie growers effectively.
Inclement weather has affected potato, wheat and mustard crop in the state to a large extent.
"Damage has been more severe in case of potato and mustard," said Kumar. Agriculture and horticulture departments can calculate exact damage based on the condition of the crop in the fields.
Use of satellite can also be made. "Government is already finding out about put stubble burning cases based on satellite data so why can't the data be used to find out exact damage each field has suffered," said spokesperson, BKU, UP, Alok Verma.
