Courts, State Central Library introduce curbs

T’puram: Concerns over Covid-19 has hit the judiciary too. The principal district and sessions judge here on Wednesday issued a directive to adjourn cases till Friday and consider only emergency cases in the bench to avoid crowding inside court rooms and on the premises of courts.
District judge K Babu has directed all judicial officers in the district to adjourn all cases and always consider adjournments requested by lawyers or parties even in emergency matters.
Only those cases that have to be considered in a time-bound manner, such as bail applications of under-trial prisoners and producing accused persons arrested by the police, will be considered without any change. Routine sittings of criminal cases and civil cases may be adjourned for a later date, the judge held.
Jail authorities were informed that the under-trial prisoners need not be produced before the courts till Friday. However, there is no restriction in carrying out procedures with regard to remand extension of under-trial prisoners via video conferencing facility.
The district judge also directed all court staff, especially those who directly deal with the public, to wear masks and use hand-sanitizer as instructed by the health department.
The State Central Library authorities too have introduced some regulations in the functioning of the library in view of concerns over spread of Covid-19. The librarian on Wednesday issued a statement appealing the members to visit the library only if it is utmost necessary.
The reference section and internet browsing section of the library will be closed from March 16 to 31. Reading rooms will function only from 8am to 11am on these days.
Entry will be banned for foreigners. The touch screen information kiosk and children’s section and park will also be shut down. Children will not be allowed to sit together and study in the library.
They have also cancelled a few programmes to be held in the library this summer. This include a discussion on the novel ‘Mamangam’ authored by Sajeev Pillai, which was scheduled for Friday, a poetry fest scheduled on April 4 and summer school that was scheduled to commence on April 14.
