KOLKATA: An old air-conditioned
Metro rake faltered inside the
tunnel soon after starting from
Shyambazar on Wednesday afternoon. Metro services were disrupted for nearly 15 minutes due to the incident that spread
panic among passengers. Officials finally reversed the rake and evacuated the panicked passengers at Shyambazar around 3.19pm. The empty rake started towards Kavi Subhash and also carried passengers from the Central station as no other defect was found.
“The incident occurred around 3.03pm soon after the Kavi Subhash-bound rake had left Shyambazar station. Initially, there was brake-binding and then it refused to withdraw power from the third rail. When the rake stopped, one-and-a-half coaches were still at the Shyambazar platform and the driving motorman immediately instructed the conducting motorman (the one at the rear of the train) to run it towards Shyambazar. Passengers were evacuated as soon as the rake reached Shyambazar,” said Metro Railway CPRO Indrani Banerjee.
While Metro Railway started operating the new AC rakes arriving from ICF, Chennai, it is still stuck with some older ones. Metro has now started running over 75% AC services and the older rakes are also being used. This has resulted in some technical glitches over the last few months.
