Tamil Nadu government machinery plunges into action to bring normalcy

Tension gripped in the city after miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at Hindu
COIMBATORE: Even as the government machinery has plunged into action to contain tension sparked by communal elements in Coimbatore, a gang assaulted a member of a Hindu outfit on Wednesday evening.
Two men wearing helmets barged into the shop of Suryaprakash, 28, an RSS functionary, near Sundarapuram in the city outskirts around 6.30pm. The men assaulted Suryaprakash with rods and fled the place within moments in a motorbike. Soon after the attack, Suryaprakash, who sustained injuries on his head and in arms, went to a private hospital for treatment in his friend’s bike as a pillion rider. Police who rushed to the spot and conducted inquiries said they are yet to identify the assailants and the motive.
Incidentally, the attack took place when DGP J K Tripathy who flew down to Coimbatore in the afternoon, was holding a meeting with senior cops in the city on measures to be taken to contain the violent attacks.
On Tuesday night, unidentified men who were travelling on a two-wheeler had hurled stones at the auto of A Sheriff, 32, a resident of Kuniyamuthur, when he was traveling near Puttuvikki road in the city.
Tripathy has instructed the officials to step up vigil in the city and crack down on the anti–social elements sparking tension. He has also told the authorities here to expedite investigation into the assaults and petrol bomb attacks over the past few days and arrest all those behind the incidents.
Earlier in the day, ADGP (law and order) Jayanth Murali held a meeting with city commissioner Sumit Sharan where they discussed ways and means to diffuse the tension and reign on the outfits which are upping the ante every passing day.
District collector K Rajamani for his part held a meeting with Hindu outfit members and asked them to bring normalcy to the city. The collector told the functionaries that communal clash would pull down the growth of Coimbatore at a time when the city is bracing up for massive development.
Rajamani said both the district administration and police department was taking steps to ensure law and order in the city. “Following a few unpleasant incidents that took place in the city, meetings were conducted with outfits and they had assured to extend their full support to us. We have been taking serious steps to bring normalcy in the city,’’ he said.
He warned of stringent action against those who spread fake or hatred messages in social media.
