Global music gigs cancelled in Bengaluru amid coronavirus scare

Wacken Bangalore Open Air, said to be India’s biggest rock and heavy metal fest, has been shelved
BENGALURU: Globally, the impact of Covid-19 is leading to cancellation or postponement of big-ticket music festivals. Closer home, Bengaluru too is seeing an impact with concerts featuring international artistes being cancelled or postponed. The biggest one being American pop star Khalid’s Free Spirit Asia tour. The 23-year-old pop star, who was scheduled to perform in Bengaluru on April 14, has postponed the tour for now.
Coronavirus outbreak live updates
“Due to the recent advisories and travel restrictions in several Asian countries, Khalid will be postponing his upcoming tour of Asia, including his India concert. Our highest priority remains the safety of Khalid’s fans, his team and everyone who has been working on these concerts. We are actively working on rescheduled concert dates,” Khalid’s global team said.
Fans who have already bought tickets, however, needn’t worry. “All customers who have purchased tickets for the show in India on BookMy-Show can retain their tickets, which will be valid for the new show dates or are entitled to a full refund, should they be unable to make it for the new dates,” the statement adds.
Bangalore Open Air postponed
Wacken Bangalore Open Air, touted to be India’s biggest rock and heavy metal festival, which was to be held on March 21, has been shelved.
A part of the official statement issued by the band reads: “The travel and visa restrictions related to the coronavirus epidemic compels us to take this step to postpone the date of this year’s festival to a summer date.” Organiser Salman Syed said: “We are looking at mid-June or July dates.”
Indian bands cancel concerts
City-based bands like Parvaaz, Perfect Strangers, Thermal and a Quarter and Agam too have had to cancel gigs. Parvaaz, which was supposed to be setting out on an India tour to promote their new album, Kun has cancelled concerts in Delhi, Mumbai, and Chandigarh and will for now only be holding a concert in Bengaluru.
Other city concerts cancelled
A concert featuring Austrian pop singer Violetta Parisini that was to be held this weekend at Windmills Craftworks has been cancelled. An EDM concert featuring English electronic producer Jody Wisternoff at another city restaurant too has been called off.
