Ganga Mela to mark end of festivities

Kanpur: The Holi festivity of the city will conclude in 'Anuradha Nakshatra' with Ganga Mela to be held on March 15.
The function, to commence after paying floral tributes to the revolutionaries, will conclude on March 15 evening with Ganga Mela to be held on the bank of the river (Ganga) and a Bal Mela at Rajjan Babu Park. According to Kanpur Hatia Holi Mahotsava committee in between the two events, the unique 'Rangon ka Thela' will roam in the traditional routes of the city,
Patron of the committee, Moolchand Seth and conveners Gyanendra Bishnoi and Vijay Singh said that on March 15, DM Brahmadeo Ram Tiwari, SSP Anant Dev and other celebrities of the city would garland the stone on which are inscribed names of the freedom fighters, and then hoist the national flag at Rajjan Babu Park.
The 'Rango ka Thela' procession, after passing through Nayaganj, Kahu Kothi, Birhana Road and Hatia, would reach Rajjan Babu Park, they said.
Briefing about the history of the Ganga Mela in 'Anuradha Nakshatra', Bishnoi said that in 1942 the British collector of the city had imposed restrictions on palying Holi, but a group of youths, belonging to Hatia locality, decided to break the restriction and play Holi. They, under the leadership of Babu Gulab Chandra Seth, first hoisted the tricolour and then played Holi.
“The police arrested the youths. The action led to fury and the entire city, as a mark of protest, decided to play Holi daily until the arrested youths were set free. The British government ultimately bowed to their demand and released the youths. Since they were released in 'Anuradha Nakshtra', the youths again played Holi which later on became a tradition”, Bishnoi said.
The members of the committee complained that though Ganga Mela had a historical significance, but still there were some problems. Rajjan Babu Park has been encroached by the people and Kesco had installed its transformer inside the park. KMC authorities had neither repaired the routes of 'Rangon ka Thela nor done any fogging in the open drains.
Meanwhile, DM Brahmadeo Ram Tiwari on Wednesday inspected the lanes of Hatia, Generalganj area and Rajjan Babu Park. He directed the Kesco officials to tie the electric wires hanging on roads and remove transformer from the park. He also asked them to install swings in the park for children on the occasion of Bal Mela.
The DM also visited the inscription stone and asked about the history of the mela from Hatia Holi Mahotsava committee and the locals. He said Kanpur would continue live with its old and historical custom of Ganga Mela.
