Mangaluru: Four sentenced to life imprisonment for killing man

MANGALURU: Sixth additional district and sessions judge Sayeedunnisa has sentenced 4 people from Uttar Pradesh to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of a labourer.
Public prosecutor Jayarama Shetty said the convicts are Shashishekar Yadav, 22, Mangaro Yadav, 28, Ritesh Yadav, 23, and Jitender Yadav, 21, who hail from a village in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. They were working for a company as construction labourers, and were in the city as part of a construction project being undertaken at the NITK Surathkal campus.
The company had built sheds for labourers in Mukka Mallamar. At around 6.45pm on March 11, 2018, when Shashishekar returned to his shed from work, he found his mobile phone damaged and started asking as to who was responsible for it. That was when the three other accused joined him.
The victim Ajay Kumar Choudhary, 25, a resident of Khagaria district of Bihar and a labourer, who was staying in one of the sheds, asked the convicts to calm down. This did not go down well with them, and they abused him, after which Shashishekar picked a wooden stick and hit the victim. The rest joined in beating him till he fell unconscious. He was rushed to a private hospital. Pulakit Yadav Choudhary, another labourer at the shed, approached the Surathkal police station, and a complaint was filed in this regard. Ajay Kumar was declared dead at 4.15am on March 12, 2018.
Inspector Shridhar Shastri led the investigation and a chargesheet was filed by inspector Ramakrishan K J. The accused have been in judicial custody since their arrest. After examining 21 witnesses and 36 documents, the court convicted the accused to three months imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500 each under IPC Section 504( intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), one year of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000 each under IPC Section 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), one year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 each under IPC Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 under Section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapon), three months of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500 each under IPC Section 506 (criminal intimidation) and life imprisonment with a fine of Rs 25,000 each under IPC Section 302 (murder).
