AHMEDABAD: On Wednesday, students of Class XII (science and commerce) were all smiles after contending with easy board exam papers. But many Class X students complained that the mathematics test was tough.
Last year, as many as 2.5 lakh students failed the
maths exam and this time the number is expected to go higher, said teachers and experts. After language and science & technology, the third exam paper of mathematics stumped many students.
"According to the blueprint for setting the exam paper, 15% of the questions can be tough. In this paper, about 25% were tough," said Maulik Shah, a mathematics teacher at a city school.
In one of the questions, the students were asked to determine the ages of a woman named Aishwariya and her daughter Aradhya. "This was one of the toughest questions in the exam and required the application of two formulas," said Riddhi Patel, a Class X student. "Such questions are usually asked in competitive exams like GUJCET. It's difficult for Class X students to solve them."Board officials however denied that the paper was tough. "We have reviewed the paper and found it was in line with the blueprint," said a board official. "We don't think it was tough. Nor have we received any complaint from students, parents, or teachers."
Fourteen cases of cheating in the Class X exam were registered on Wednesday. Two Class X students were caught copying at an exam centre in Rakhial. In another instance, two dummy Class X candidates were caught from an exam centre in Bhavnagar.
In the case of Class XII (science), three students were caught on Wednesday for using unfair means in the biology test. Of them was caught at an exam centre in Ahmedabad using a mobile phone in the classroom. As for the Class XII (commerce) exam, eight students were caught cheating while taking the economics exam on Wednesday.
