Showers affect revelry, but fail to dampen festive spirit

Prayagraj: As overcast conditions and sporadic showers partially affected Holi celebrations in Sangam city on Tuesday, city residents made up for the loss by coming out on the streets with great enthusiasm on Wednesday to enjoy the festival of colours.
The famous ‘kapda phad’ (tearing of outfits) Holi of Chowk area and floral Holi of Civil Lines was attended by a large number of locals on Wednesday.
Although the weather on Monday was fairly clear with bright sunshine and maximum and minimum temperatures at 29.2 degrees and 17.4 degree Celsius respectively, residents woke up on Tuesday to overcast sky.
As people started coming out to celebrate the festival, several localities witnessed drizzles.
The weather remained almost the same all day through as maximum temperature was recorded at 23.6 degrees (a drop of around 6 degrees) and minimum temperature stood at 12.7 degrees (around 5 degrees less than Monday).
Due to cold breeze and showers, many Holi revelers remained indoors or chose to play with dry colours like ‘gulal’ and ‘abeer’.
“We had called everyone to come in the apartment’s garden area. We had arranged for water, sweets and gulal to celebrate Holi like previous years but as cold winds returned, it was only sweets and ‘gulal’ which dominated Holi celebrations,” said Sukanya, a student of Allahabad University.
However, Holi celebrations remained unaffected in several localities of the city. Local residents, especially in Chowk, Khuldabad, Katra, and Sulem Sarai areas played Holi with traditional fervour.
People, however, celebrated the festival more on Wednesday as compared to the main day of the festival as weather became much more conducive for revellers. The famous ‘kapda phad’ (tearing of outfits) Holi of Chowk area was attended by a large number of locals.
Likewise, Holi milan events were organised by various private and government institutions, people greeted each other with ‘gulal’ and danced to the tunes of Holi songs. They embraced and greeted each other, offered sweets and wished prosperity to each other.
In various localities, men and women organised in-house parties. “We arranged DJ, Holi colours, eatables and sweets to celebrate the occasion with our near and dear ones,” said Meenu Khanna, a resident of Dariyabad.
