Bhubaneswar: Ruckus in House over temple funds

Jaganath temple in Puri
BHUBANESWAR: The Congress MLAs on Wednesday created ruckus in the assembly, seeking fixing of responsibilities for deposit of Rs 545 crore funds of Jaganath temple in Puri in crisis-ridden Yes Bank. In Delhi, BJD MPs met Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, seeking her intervention for withdrawal of the fixed deposits.
Moments after the assembly reconvened for the second phase of budget session, the Congress members stormed into the well of the House. Raising anti-government slogans, the MLAs demanded a probe to find out who “took the erroneous decision of depositing the money in the private bank.” Amid the din, Speaker S N Patro adjourned the House first till 12.30pm and again till 3pm. Speaking to reporters outside the assembly, Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati said, “We put pressure on the government to find out the person who decided to deposit the funds in a private bank, pushing its fate into uncertainty. The God’s money may be lost.”
The BJP had given notice for an adjournment motion discussion on the temple fund issue, but it could not be taken up because of the continued disruptions in the proceedings. “We had given a notice for discussion on the temple fund issue. The discussion could have brought out facts to the public domain. The Congress members stormed into the well and the speaker adjourned the House. It seems BJD and Congress have an understanding,” deputy leader of opposition Bisnhu Sethi said. Both BJD and Congress dismissed Sethi’s allegation. “It is unfortunate the Congress members stalled the proceedings though the government is ready for discussion on any issue,” government chief whip Pramila Mallik said. In the meantime, BJD parliamentary party leader in Rajya Sabha, Prasanna Acharya, led a delegation of party MPs and met Sitharaman in Delhi. “The finance minister assured us that the Lord’s money is safe,” Acharya said.
Jagannath Sena, a socio-political outfit, lodged a complaint with the CBI, seeking a probe into deposit of temple funds. One Pradipta Naik has lodged a complaint with the Odisha Human Rights Commission, seeking its intervention in the issue.
