AMRITSAR: The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the Special Task Force (STF), Amritsar are in the process of extraditing alleged drug mafiosi Simarjeet Singh Sandhu, who was earlier arrested by the Italian police, said STF assistant inspector general (AIG) Rachpal Singh on Wednesday.
Talking to the media here, the AIG said, "The Italian police has reportedly arrested Sandhu in the recent past following issuance of a Red Corner Notice against him by the Interpol at the behest of Gujarat ATS." Sandhu, a resident of Amritsar, is wanted in a case of smuggling of 300kg heroin from Pakistan to Gujarat. He said that the STF had received the test report of drug samples which confirmed the heroin content.

The police officer said the STF has so far arrested 13 persons in the international drug racket spanning through Australia, Italy, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. "The 14th accused, Sahil Sharma, is on remand till March 14," he said. Sahil is son of a Congress party municipal councillor.
Rachpal said Sahil's house in Green Field Colony on Majitha Road was used to store the narcotics and he also used to lead the vehicles while transporting the heroin in exchange of hefty amounts.
He said STF was also in the process of obtaining production warrant of the truck driver and his two accomplices, who had brought the narcotics in Amritsar, for further investigations.
Notably, the STF had on January 31 recovered around 197kg heroin, including 188kg from the house of a former SAD (B) leader Anwar Masih, who surrendered before the police on February 7. The heroin was processed in the house of Masih by an Afghan national Arman Basharmal. About the role of Masih, Rachpal said he could not disclose more to the media owing to the sensitive nature of the case.
