Rajkot:
In its journal published this month, the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) has recognized the tireless efforts of Dr Sanjay Pandya,
a Rajkot-based nephrologist who,
for the past 10 years, have been single-mindedly engaged in spreading awareness about preventing kidney diseases.
“It’s one of the highest recognition for a kidney doctor to get his work published and appreciated by ASN. It has 22,000 active members worldwide and is the world’s largest professional society committed to the study of kidney diseases,” said Dr Pandya, while talking to TOI on the backdrop of World Kidney Day, observed on the second Thursday of March.
According to Dr Pandya, his work had been selected for publication because this year’s theme is: “Kidney health for everyone, everywhere”.
Pandya, who has been running a kidney education foundation since 2006, has also published a book on the subject in Gujarati, which was later translated in Hindi to reach out to the masses. In 2010, he launched a portal where he uploaded the contents of the book. Over the last decade, Dr Pandya has been continuously providing various contents on his portal on information, education and prevention measures in 37 languages including 20 foreign languages like Arabic, Filipino, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Persian, Serbian, Swahili, Turkish, and German. The portal has generated 70 million hits in the past 10 years.
According to Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) Ahmedabad in 2019 total 390 transplantation took place out of that 89 are cadaver, the current waiting list is 350. Dr Pandya believes that delayed knowledge of kidney diseases proves disastrous not only for the patient, but the entire family. This calls for aggressive dissemination of prevention-related awareness, he said.
