An international research team headed by scientists at the University of California, San Diego, has harnessed machine learning models to identify patients who have cancer, and often which type, by analyzing patterns of bacterial and viral microbial DNA in single blood sample. The researcher suggest that if their technology holds up in further testing, it could be used for early disease diagnosis, as well as for also long term therapeutic monitoring
