HYDERABAD: The
Airports Authority of India (
AAI) has conducted a preliminary study at six sites for new airports identified by the Telangana government including
Warangal, Adilabad, Peddapalli, Nizamabad, Kothagudem and Mahabubnagar. However, the Union ministry of
civil aviation said that it had not received any proposal for development of new airports in Telangana.
The aerial distance between the
Mamnoor site in Warangal, the second biggest city in Telangana, to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad is around 145 kilometres. As per the concession agreement of the latter, no new airport should come up in the range of 150 km for the next 60 years.
Replying to question raised by MP Komatireddy Venkat Reddy on the Warangal airport, minister of state for civil aviation,
Hardeep Puri said: “Ministry has issued a Greenfield Airport Policy for development of greenfield airports across the country. The policy permits statement government or airport company or individual developers to establish a greenfield airport after obtaining site clearance and in-principle approval from Ministry of civil aviation.”
The developer shall make an application before a steering committee for the first stage clearance, known as a site clearance in the prescribed proforma. “We have not received any proposal from the state government or any other airport developer for construction of an airport in Warangal and Mamnoor in Telangana state as per Greenfield Airport Policy,” Hardeep Puri said.
“On request of the government of Telangana, AAI has undertaken preliminary study at the sites identified by the government of Telangana including Warangal,” the Union minister said. Basanthnagar in Peddapalli, Khanapur in Adilabad, Jakranpalli in Nizamabad, Gudibanda in Mahabubnagar and Kothagudem are the other sites identified.
The Mamnoor airport area is spread over 706 acres and has an airstrip from pre-independence era built by Nizam VII in 1930 and was operational till 1981. Khanapur in Adilabad, which was also inspected by the AAI team has already got 369 acres of the aerodrome that was operational during World War 2.
The Mamnoor airport served paper mills and also for the visits of VIPs. The Jakranpalli site, also inspected by AAI, is aimed at serving lakhs of ulf immigrants from Nizamabad region. The Kothagudem site falls under a reserve forest area.
