PATNA: Altogether 19 people were killed, including three in the state capital, during Holi celebrations across Bihar on Tuesday. Among the three killed in Patna district was a JD(U) youth leader Kanhaiya Kaushik (30).
Kaushik, who was the state spokesperson for the youth wing of JD(U), was shot at by one of his friends, Kush Kumar Singh, for not including his photo in a poster extending Holi wishes. Another friend Chandan Kumar, who was accompanying Kaushik, also sustained bullet injuries.
The incident took place at Patel Nagar at 8.30pm on Tuesday. While Kaushik died during treatment at a private hospital on Bailey Road, Chandan is under treatment, police said, adding, two people were arrested on Wednesday while the prime accused Kush Kumar Singh is absconding.
In-charge City SP (central) D Amarkesh said, “Kaushik was at Shashtri Nagar police station half an hour before the incident to lodge a complaint against a few persons who had misbehaved with him on the issue of the Holi poster.”
In two other incidents in Patna, a property dealer Karu Rai (22) and a daily wager Haroo Yadav were also killed.
Altogether 16 murders during Holi were reported from eight districts across the state on Tuesday. Of these, four were lynched, two were stabbed to death and the rest were shot.
In Begusarai, a 40-year-old daily wager Rajesh Kumar was beaten to death by two bike-borne men at Lohiya Nagar in
Bhagalpur town on Tuesday night after Kumar’s cycle collided with their bike, DSP (headquarters) Kundan Kumar Singh said. In another incident, one Pashupati Yadav was shot dead and his uncle and cousin were injured by a shopkeeper Pankaj Yadav over a petty dispute.
In Sitamarhi, villagers lynched two persons, Mohammad Shahrukh Khan (21) and Mohammad Kasim (27), while they were trying to flee after allegedly looting money from a stationery shop owner Rampravesh Mahto at Sonbarsa on Tuesday.
In Gaya, one person was shot dead and at least three policemen were injured after a group clash between residents of two villages under Mufassil police station on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Bittu Sao (25).
Gaya SSP Rajeev Mishra said Buniyadganj police station SHO Shashi Kumar Rana received a deep cut on his face while Wazirganj sub-divisional officer’s bodyguard got his leg fractured during the heavy stone pelting.
In Siwan, a retired Army jawan Rajendra Prasad (58) died in stone pelting between two groups at a village under Mharajganj police station area around 2.30pm on Tuesday.
In Jamui, two persons were killed after they stabbed each other at a village under Jhajha police station area on Tuesday. SHO Sudeshwar Paswan said the deceased were identified as Mantu Manjhi and Jugeshgwar Paswan.
In Munger, an elderly man was lynched while a block-level JD(U) leader received gunshot injury after a caste-based clash broke out at a village under Mufassil police station on Tuesday. Munger SP Lipi Singh said, “The political leader Ravish Paswan (30) has been taken to a private hospital in Patna for treatment. Five persons have been arrested.”
In Bhagalpur, two persons Mohammad Jhakhas and Mohammad Putun were arrested after one Bishnu Mandal was shot at a village in Jagdishpur on Tuesday night over playing a song in Holi, SSP Ashish Bharti said. In another incident, police recovered the body of a 26-year-old youth Shubham Saket from Vikramshila colony in Bhagalpur.
In Nalanda, one Raja Ram was lynched for opposing an illicit relationship between a villager and a widow. In another incident, a 19-year-old youth Aman Kumar was shot dead after being thrashed by some people at a village at Bena police station area on Tuesday.
