Nagpur: Aimed at enthusing confidence among women, girls and even young boys by ensuring their safety, director general of police (DGP) Subodh Kumar Jaiswal has, on the occasion of International Women’s Day on Sunday, issued orders to kick start ‘Police Didi’ (Sister Cop) and ‘Police Kaka’ (Uncle Cop) schemes across all police stations in the state.
‘Police Didi’ scheme, a brainchild of Rashmi Shukla, who is now commissioner of state intelligence, was first implemented while she was Pune CP a few years ago. Shortly after that, Shukla’s batchmate and then Nagpur police chief K Venkatesham had started ‘Buddy Cops’ programme in the city.
Under the ‘Police Didi’ scheme, a woman cop from every police station would be entrusted with the responsibility to visit women and girls hostels, education institutes and such places to befriend the inmates. The cop would also create a social media group with the women and girls as its members. The group members will be able to post their grievances, seek advise and also forward suggestions for local police stations to act.
An officer said the group members can also share their personal grievances with the woman constable. “If some personal issues are required to be addressed, our constable would be there to help,” said the officer. “This platform would shield many women and girls from becoming silent victim,” said the officer.
In similar fashion, ‘Police Kaka’ will be there to help young boys with whom they can share grievances and seek assistance in matters which they might be afraid to share with the family. “In today’s world, it’s not only women or girls, but many boys too fall victim to exploitation which they cannot share with parents or other family members,” he said.
