COIMBATORE: Unable to repay the loans that their son had taken, a couple from Loganathapuram near Sundarapuram committed suicide by consuming a pesticide, which is locally known as cow dung powder, on Saturday.
Pointing out that their 24-year-old son Harihara Kumar had borrowed lakhs of rupees from many people, a police officer said the couple took the extreme step after moneylenders started to harass them by seeking to know the whereabouts of their son, who had been missing for the past couple of days.
The Podanur police identified the deceased as Vijayachandran, 57 and his wife Uma Maheswari, 49. According to a police officer, neighbours had seen the couple battling for their life and rushed them to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead. After the autopsy, the bodies were handed over to the family members.
