KOLKATA: A rickshawpuller was arrested for carrying 10kg deer meat at Nischindipur in Kulpi on Sunday morning. The arrest was made a day after a private tutor was nabbed with two deer skins. The incident sent forest officials in a tizzy and they suspect that a deer poaching racket must have been active in this zone.
A Kulpi police station sub-inspector became suspicious with the behaviour of the rickshawpuller, Prakash Maiti (50), a resident of Nischindipur, and accosted him. A closer scrutiny revealed that it was deer meat, which Maiti confessed to carrying. Cops are interrogating him to trace the kingpin of racket.
Maiti claimed that the meat was meant for a local Holi party. A forest official said that a deer generally produces 40 -45kg meat. This means that rest of the meat was sold elsewhere.
