Pregnant woman ends life over dowry harassment

Mysuru: A 23-year-old pregnant woman committed suicide over alleged dowry harssment in Kalkunike village in Hunsur on Saturday evening.
The police have registered a case under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of IPC on the basis of a complaint lodged by the woman’s father B Basavanna, a resident of Banchalli Hundi in Nanjanagud taluk. He alleged that his daughter committed suicide due to dowry harassment.
According to police, the woman, B Lakshmi, had married K Yogesh, a resident of Kalkunike village nearly 10 months ago.
Lakshmi's parents alleged that her in-laws and husband were pressuring her to get more dowry even though they had paid money at the time of wedding. They alleged that within two months of the wedding, her husband and in-laws started harassing her, forcing her to take an extreme step. She was found hanging from the ceiling fan.
According to sources, on Friday, Lakshmi had called her parents and requested them to take her back to her native village as she can't tolerate the harassment. Her parents consoled her by saying they will come on Saturday and take her back. But on Saturday, her in-laws called her parents informing them about the death.
The family members of Lakshmi held a flash protest in front of Hunsur town police station demanding action against all the accused. The body was handed over to the family on Sunday after a postmortem in KR hospital in Mysuru.
