AMBALA: On the occasion of International Women's Day, the jail department of Haryana has taken a new initiative to make women prisoners in state jails self-sufficient and enable them to earn their livelihood and join the mainstream of society when they come out of jail.
In this episode, the director general of prisons (DGP) Haryana, K Selvaraj inaugurated a modern fashion studio in Ambala Central Jail premises on Sunday.
This fashion studio has been opened by the prison department in association with Charity on Wheels, a social service organization. The jail department has started a special program to make women prisoners skilled in subjects like dress-making.
DGP Jail K Selvaraj informed this scheme has been started from the Central Jail Ambala to further the government's women empowerment policies and after that, it will be started soon in the other four jails of the state, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Panipat, and Sonipat.
"Through this studio, the women inmates lodged in this jail will be trained in the most modern technique for dress-making, fashion designing, sewing-embroidery, and cutting-tailoring. In addition to training women inmates to make international-level apparel, the marketing of the costumes made by these prisoners will also be done by the Charity on Wheels. In the first phase, women prisoners will be given basic training for three months. After that, the costumes prepared by these women prisoners will be made available in the market", said K Selvaraj.
The chairperson of the association, Winky Singh, said, "Earlier the same program was started by our organization in Mandoli and Tihar Jail. This program not only provides an opportunity to improve the skills of the jail inmates, but it also shifts their focus from negative subjects to positive and productivity and it also helps in removing their mental stress."
DGP Selvaraj also inspected the ward, jail factory, hospital and kitchen of the women prisoners on this occasion. He also saw the products being prepared by the prisoners in the bakery and tasted the products. He appreciated the goods being prepared in the bakery and also took information from the inmates who prepared the goods, about how these products are prepared. He also knew the problems of the prisoners.
On this occasion, the jail superintendent Lakhbir Singh Brar gave detailed information to the DGP about all the prison-related activities. He informed that Mahavir International, an NGO, has also made available two sewing machines for the fashion design course opened for women prisoners. The DGP expressed satisfaction with all the works during the inspection.
On this occasion, jail superintendent Lakhbir Singh Brar, DSP Vishal, DSP Bhupinder Singh, Rajiv Jain from Mahavir Association and other prison officials were present.
