CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (HVPN) has deposits worth Rs 1,000 crore in Yes Bank, according to sources in the Haryana governemnt.
The RBI superseded the board of Yes Bank under former SBI executive Prashant Kumar on Thursday and put a moratorium till April 3 during which customers will not be allowed to withdraw more than Rs 50,000 from their account, even if they hold multiple accounts.
HPVN's deposits include a fixed deposit of Rs 250 crore, and all of these had been made last month.
The latest development at Yes Bank has put the role of those who opened the accounts under the scanner. Efforts to reach out to HVPN managing director, who is one of the authorities, failed. Even a text message sent to officer remained unanswered.
A senior officer in the Haryana civil secretariat said there was no risk to the money.
"It is not just HVPN, but other state-owned public sector units (PSUs) and governent departments have opened accounts in this bank as it has been approved by the finance department. Also, since this bank offered maximum interest on savings and FDs, we preferred this bank over others. There is no such involvement of any individual officer who could be blamed,'' said the senior officer.
The officer added that Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharama had already made it clear that money was safe with the bank. "We don't have any reason to panic. We are a government agency. Every step is taken as per rules. We are also closely monitoring the situation," the officer said.
