AMBALA: In some relief to
female students and women of
Ambala, the Haryana assembly speaker
Gian Chand Gupta flagged-off 9
pink buses on the ‘International Women’s Day’ on Sunday and these buses will run on determined city service routes.
The local residents had been demanding special bus service for the female students and women from a past long time and a total of 9 buses have been given to Ambala.
Gupta visited here as a chief guest of the district-level function with regards to the celebration of International Women’s Day and he also gave awards to some women achievers of the Ambala district.
Highlighting an increase in the number of girls in sex ratio, Gupta said, “Special efforts have been made to fight against the female foeticide by the state government and Haryana health minister
Anil Vij. He has acted strictly against private clinics, hospitals and elsewhere, due to which success has been achieved in stopping the practice of female foeticide.”
Talking about women security, Gupta said, “A total of 31 women police stations have been opened in the state and in 2014, there were only 2 women police stations in the state. Nearly 1.5 lakh daughters and women have installed the Durga Shakti app.”
He said on the day of International Women’s Day, a total of 200 pink buses have been started in the service of women. Gupta said 9 pink buses have been added to the fleet of roadways in Ambala as well, and these will provide convenience to female students and women.
Ambala being an educational hub for its nearby areas, a large number of students visit here every day from rural areas for study purposes. These buses would benefit the female students of colleges, industrial training institutes, and
polytechnic colleges in Ambala City and Cantonment areas.
Sources told during the morning and evening rush hours these buses would be run especially for the female students and during the other hours these would run for the women passengers.
On the other side the Ambala residents have welcomed this development by the government but they feel that 9 buses are less for the female students as these would hardly accommodate around 500-600 students at a time. As the number of female students who are using public transport in Ambala is much higher.
When asked about the routes of these pink buses, Ambala City sub-divisional magistrate (SDM)-cum-Haryana roadways Ambala general manager (GM),
Gauri Midha told, “A total of 9 pink buses would be running for city service especially for female students and ladies. These buses would run on the determined routes.”
