Ludhiana: As soon as the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP councillors and leaders protested outside zone A office of the municipal corporation on Thursday for not starting the installation of
LED streetlights in areas under ward number 8, civic body officials got the related work started immediately.
BJP councillor Yashpal Chaudhary had given a warning letter to the civic body officials if LED lights were not installed in his ward in one week, then he would protest outside the MC office. On Thursday, he staged a protest in this connection. The zonal commissioner, Navraj Brar, assured the protesting leaders that work would begin immediately followed by which the protest was called off.
The councillor claimed that when Tata company was hired for replacement of LED lights the civic body did not continue with the previous contractors for repair or maintenance of old streetlights by saying that Tata would manage the same for the next seven years. He said Tata did not start the work in his ward and by that time the existing lights started getting damaged or becoming non-functional. Areas like New Madhopuri, Nirankari Colony, Daulat Colony, Mahavir Jain Nagar and Jagat Nagar were the worst affected areas. He rued that people were complaining about theft incidents and also there were chances of accidents as well due to non-functional streetlights.
He claimed that despite a warning when Tata company did not start work in his ward he had to come out to protest. He said zonal commissioner Navraj Brar assured him that work will begin immediately and after a few hours teams, along with LED lights, reached the ward. He said there were over 700 streetlights in his ward and hopefully now work would take place at a fast pace.
The problem of LED streetlights has become a major cause of concern for the civic body officials as well as the councillors because there was no maintenance of the lights in case there was any technical snag. Many times the matter has been raised in the house meeting as well as in the general meetings but the execution of the related was always getting late.
