Mumbai: A woman's voice was all it took a 42-year-old Nalasopara man to con traders in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Pune and Nashik.
Manickpur police arrested Manish Ambekar for calling up traders on their cellphones by posing as a woman. Police recovered around Rs 2 lakh from him. He has 22 cases of cheating registered with various police stations.
Police had launched a search for the 'woman' after traders in Vasai-Virar region complained of being sweet-talked by a woman. Ambekar would go to jewellery showrooms, grocery shops and medical stores, where cellphone numbers of owners were displayed on name boards. Police said Ambekar would call up and show interest in making purchases. After convincing the victims to deliver the goods/products at a spot, he would tell them to bring along Rs100 and Rs500 notes, to exchange with Rs2,000 notes, which 'she' had in abundance.
Police said many traders fell for the trap and lost their goods/products and cash.
A resident of Sadguru Nagar in Nalasopara (W), Ambekar would leave home for work. He would loiter around busy streets lined with shops. Police said he has cases registered in Bhandup, Dahisar, Ghatkopar, Dahanu, Palghar, Kasa, Vasai, Kalwa, Naupada, Wagle Estate, Shahpur, Pune and Nashik.
Police laid a trap for Ambekar for four days. He fell into the police net on February 28. Numbers from which calls were made to victims helped nail the accused. Police said he would destroy each SIM card after trapping a victim. With his arrest seven cases in Manickpur, Shahpur, Palghar, Kasa, Dahanu, Naupada and Nashik have been cracked. He was booked under IPC section 420 for cheating and is in police custody.
