Ludhiana: To check the disposal of solid waste into Buddha Nullah, iron mesh (chain link fencing) would be installed on both sides of the water body. Punjab food, civil supplies and consumer affairs minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu said the tenders for this Rs 13.42 crore project have already been floated and this project would be carried out by funds being provided by the Ludhiana Smart City Ltd.
In a statement issued here on Thursday, Ashu said a total of 28km (14km on each side) of chain link fencing of 10-ft height would be installed on both sides of Buddha Dariya within municipal limits. He said this fencing would check the disposal of solid waste into the nullah, help in its beautification as tree saplings and flowers would be installed on both sides, besides providing safety for commuters and area residents.
It is pertinent to mention that the Punjab government has already approved Rs650-crore project for rejuvenation of the Buddha Nullah (total 47.55km out of which 14km pass through Ludhiana). He said this project is likely to be completed in next two years. He said funds for this project have also been allocated in the recently concluded budget session.
Buddha Nullah was an old tributary of the Sutlej and once had more than 50 species of fish, but unfortunately it started losing its glory with the passage of time. He said he along with Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu had also met Union minister of jal shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in Delhi regarding this matter.
Ashu assured the city residents when the Rs650 crore project for rejuvenation of the Buddha Dariya starts, he would personally monitor it on a regular basis so that the project is completed in next two years.
