A bus driver has been hailed a hero after driving a schoolboy home to his parents after he got lost and boarded the wrong bus.

Jeet Gill had already finished his shift for Transport Canberra when he noticed the boy at the side of the road.

The youngster had got on the wrong bus home and had no idea how to get back to see his parents.

But in a remarkable act of kindness Mr Gill contacted the bus service's depot and got permission to drive the boy home.

The boy's parents became increasingly worried when their son didn't come home.

His parents said they became seriously concerned when a half hour after he was supposed to be home he still hadn't returned.

The child's mother had left their home to continue to search while his father called the police when Mr Gill arrived with their son.

The boy's father was extremely thankful to have his son returned that he hugged them both.

'After realising the situation, the driver drove all the way to our place to drop him off … completely the other side of town,' the father told Transport Canberra.

'That bus driver went above and beyond, and I hope he gets thanked.'

Mr Gill said it was nice to see the boy's parents happy once they realised their son was safe.

He said he thought about his own son being in that position when he saw the boy.

'When I saw him, and looked at his eyes, I saw my son. So straight away I said "no problem",' he told the ABC.

Ian McGlinn, Executive Branch Manager at Transport Canberra and City Services said, said lost children on public transport is a regular occurence.

Mr Gill said it is important for children to remember their address and carer's phone numbers.
