CHENNAI: Residents of Nandambakkam are likely to receive piped water soon. Metrowater has laid pipelines in the locality.
Metrowater executive director T Prabhu Shankar told TOI that the area was a "small residential pocket with a few shops". "Residents will get water from Veeranam and Chembarambakkam reservoirs. A total of 1.5 million litres of water will be supplied to 1,000 households in the area a day," he said.
Metrowater laid pipelines along 9km, Shankar said. Residents will have to lay a pipe from the supply line on the road to their houses. "For this they need not pay any amount to Metrowater. Once this is done, they will get supply," he said.
Work on laying pipes in the locality began in February 2014 and was completed within four years.
By August 2018, trial runs were conducted to check for leaks. "Once the leaks were identified and plugged, the pipelines were ready to carry water to the households. However, the connections could not be effected last year as the city faced a severe water scarcity between March and July. So the completed work was not publicised by the authorities," a Metrowater official said.
Metrowater is slowly expanding its supply network to areas added to the Chennai corporation limits. In order to cater to the increasing demand, a new 450MLD (millionn litres a day) desalination plant is being set up at Karikkattukkuppam near Vadanemmeli.
