Chennai Metro Rail gets 10 more trains

CHENNAI: Even as 9km metro corridor in North Chennai is getting ready for a June 2020 opening, the last of 10 new train sets for the line reached CMRL depot at Koyembedu in the early morning hours of Thursday.
In a release, CMRL said the new train sets would now undergo a series of tests like slow speed and high speed routine tests at the depot and the mainline before they are deployed for passenger service.
The trains will be used on the 9km phase-1 extension line between Washermenpet and Wimco Nagar.
The train sets were being manufactured at Alstom's factory in Sri City in Andhra Pradesh. The cost of the supply is about Rs 200crore, with loan assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The manufacturing of the train sets had commenced in February 2019. The trains have undergone various tests and inspections such as car body dimensional checks, water tightness check, static routine traction and brake tests. which was witnessed and approved by CMRL.
The first metro train was delivered on October 19, 2019.
The phase - I of Chennai Metro Rail Project covering a distance of 45km has been fully operational since February 10, 2019. The Phase-I Extension project from Washermenpet to Thiruvottriyur / Wimco Nagar (9.051 Km) is being implemented at an estimated completion cost of Rs 3,770 crore, said the release.
For the phase-I extension project, Chennai Metro Rail Limited awarded contract in March 2018 to a consortium of Alstom Transport, France and Alstom Transport India Limited for supply of 10 train sets.
