Dr Naresh Trehan on coronavirus prevention

Coronavirus has started to invade our personal space with constant outpour of news across our screens, from news channels, whatsapp messages to email advisories. In the wake of the fear, we spoke exclusively to India’s leading cardiologist Dr Naresh Trehan who says we may not have the complete realisation of the infection in India yet. “There could be many more cases we don’t even know about. This could be just the tip of the iceberg.”
Talking about the widespread panic, Dr Trehan said, “When someone asks me whether they should worry or panic, I tell them worrying is important as it leads to consciousness.” Advising people to take necessary precautions, he asked people to take the following measures

Maintain distance from people who seem to be suffering from flu and cold

The virus spreads through droplets of an infected person which spreads when he coughs, sneezes or laughs loudly. And these droplets, once land on a surface, can last for a long period of time. “The moment you see symptoms in someone, however benign, it is a sign enough for you to stay away from that person. Maintaining a distance of 6 meters from an infected person can safeguard you. So use caution and practice your discretion when you are in contact with a seemingly infected person.
Do not shake hands

Also, stop shaking hands and go back to the traditional ‘Namaste’. It is one of the best ways to prohibit the spread of the virus.

Use sanitisers and practice hand hygiene

Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers that have alcohol content of more than 70 percent and keep a mask for times when you see someone around you coughing or sneezing. Wash your hands frequently and do not put your fingers in your eyes and mouth.

Avoid public spaces for fun

You should try and avoid public spaces. Avoid traveling for fun. Only travel if it is something unavoidable.

Report suspected cases

Not only for your own self, you also owe some responsibility to your surroundings. So report if you find someone suspicious of having contracted the infection. Report the case and rush them to the hospital for supportive treatment.

Will hot temperatures help?

Dr Trehan also highlighted the fact that most viruses die in extreme weather so once the temperature gets warmer, there is a high possibility that it may die out its own death. “But this is more speculative for now.”

For the uninitiated, as with other respiratory illnesses, infection with 2019-nCoV can cause mild symptoms including a runny nose, sore throat, cough, and fever. It can be more severe for some people and can lead to pneumonia or breathing difficulties. More rarely, the disease can be fatal. Older people, and people with pre-existing medical conditions (such as, diabetes and heart disease) appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus.

While we report on the spread of coronavirus in India, we also need to emphasise that the need for caution shouldn't lead to an atmosphere filled with anxiety and fear. We stand by #CautionYesPanicNo
