Steve Burley left Mishel Karen heartbroken on Tuesday's episode of Married At First Sight when he told her he didn't find her attractive.

And there may be a very specific reason why the 52-year-old barbershop owner wasn't physically drawn to his 49-year-old 'wife' during the experiment.

In 2018, he said while appearing on Channel Seven's First Dates that he 'prefers' dating women in their twenties because he's 'young at heart'.

Steve said at the time: 'I'm 49, but give me mid-twenties, give me late-twenties, that's what I am!'

Steve's biography on Channel Nine's website also references his history of only dating younger women, but notes that he's trying to find love with someone his own age.

It states: 'Steve realises it's finally time to accept that dating younger women isn't working out for him.'

Before appearing on First Dates, Steve had been in a five-year relationship with MasterChef 2017 winner Diana Chan.

Diana is 32, making her two decades younger than Steve.

The businessman has credited his ex-girlfriend with supporting him through a testicular cancer battle at the age of 44.

'We were engaged to get married,' he recently said of their romance.

'Obviously, that fell apart for other reasons, but she was super supportive towards me, and I will be forever grateful because of that.'

After weeks of turning down Mishel's sexual advances, Steve decided to reveal how he felt about her during a beachside date on Tuesday's episode.

'The attraction side of it for me is just not there,' Steve said. 'Obviously there's got to be an attraction in a relationship moving forward.'

Mishel was devastated, telling producers afterwards: 'Steve doesn't like me and doesn't think I'm attractive... I've been here now six weeks. I think any decent person by now would tell you that they're not into you!'
