Thiruvananthapuram: In a suspected case of
murder, the body of a 32-year-old woman was found buried in a pit behind her under-construction house at Valikkunnu Colony in Pullanpara village under Venjaramoodu police station limits.
Police identified the deceased as Sini, daughter of Chellappan and Lalitha. Her husband, Kuttan, who is missing is the prime suspect. The couple has two sons, aged 15 and 12.
Venjaramoodu police registered a case on unnatural death and are on the lookout for Kuttan, who is a daily-wage labourer.
According to police, the body was found by Sini’s cousin Rajesh on Tuesday afternoon. Her husband had spread news that Sini was missing from Sunday evening and Rajesh had come to search for her.
While checking out the rubber plantation behind the house, he noticed an unusual amount of dry leaves over the pit that was dug to construct a septic tank. As this used to be an open pit, he grew suspicious. He cleared the leaves and started digging, to expose her left shoulder. He immediately alerted the police, who rushed to the spot and dug out the body.
The body was naked. Apart from a deep wound on the forehead there was no other major injury. Police suspect that she might have been bludgeoned using a blunt object such as a hammer.
The deceased was found with eyes popping out and tongue tightly lodged between the teeth, suggesting strangulation. Police also found a plastic mat and a small knife from the pit.
Cops suspect the murder to have been committed in another house in the locality, where the family was living. This house belongs to Chandran. Kuttan and Chandran were substance abusers and had been involved in a brawl a few days ago. During that fight, Chandran threw an acid-like substance on Kuttan’s face, inflicting burn injuries. Chandran was arrested and jailed following the incident. He lived alone and after his arrest Kuttan and Sini moved into his house along with their children.
“We found primer (zinc chromate compound used in spray paint) stains on the body of the deceased. A can of primer was found at Chandran’s house and this led us to suspect the murder took place there,” said a police officer who inspected the crime scene.
The children told the police they saw Kuttan assaulting and even threatening their mother by brandishing a circular saw.
They also revealed that he used to harass both them and their mother under the influence of alcohol.
There were times when Sini went to her brother’s house in Kollam to escape the violence. And that’s where everyone thought she was when Kuttan circulated news that she was missing.
“We have learned that Kuttan has travelled to remote villages in Karnataka as part of his job and we suspect that he could have fled to one such place now,” said Venjaramoodu station house officer inspector Aji Chandran Nair.
