Goa: Parents, two kids found dead in Mapusa flat

Shahu and Kavita Dhumale
PANAJI/SALIGAO: A family of four, including two children, was found dead in a flat at Khorlim, Mapusa, on Tuesday. While one person was found hanging in the living room, cops found three bodies lying in the bedroom. Police said that the family, originally from Gadhinglaj in Maharashtra, shifted to Goa four years ago in search of a better life.
Deputy superintendent of police Edwin Colaco said that the deceased have been identified as Shahu Dhumale, 41, who worked as a security supervisor, his wife Kavita, 35, and their sons Paras, 10, and Sairaj, 3. Police said that they haven’t ruled out financial angle behind the deaths. In the flat, the police found Shahu’s diary, in which he wrote a three page-long note about his life. Mapusa police registered a case of unnatural death.
The incident came to light at around 10am. Colaco said that the family was scheduled to shift out of the flat on Tuesday, and Shahu called his brother-in-law for assistance. The owner of the flat was also supposed to drop by to carry out some repair work.
At around 9am, when Shahu’s brother-in-law reached the flat, he knocked and got no response. He then left, assuming that they were sleeping. The owner of the flat also came and he too got no response. A neighbour then showed the owner where the Dhumales usually hung the keys of the flat outside the door. The owner used those keys to open the door, only to find Shahu hanging in the living room.
Police said that the owner then informed the police. When cops reached the site, they found Shahu hanging, and three other bodies in the bedroom. All four bodies were shifted to Goa Medical College for a postmortem examination. Colaco said that there were no external injuries on the bodies of the wife and children.
In his diary, Shahu wrote about how despite his best efforts, he hadn’t become successful, because of which he had to take drastic steps.
Police said that Shahu had purchased the flat but wasn’t in a position to repay the bank loan.Shahu then sold the flat and repaid the loans, cops said.
However, he has mentioned that he was unable to pay a bank loan indicating that he was under pressure due to the mounting debt. There was correspondence between him and the bank, police said. Hence, police are looking at the financial angle leading to the deaths.
As there is no witness in the case, it is not clear what may have really happened and how they died. The police are analysing the material on record and will wait for the post mortem report to piece together the circumstances for clarity in the mysterious death case.
Police said that would call family members of the deceased and question them to find the exact cause of death. Shahu’s sister, who is in Goa, is in a state of shock, police said.
