What happens when a girl is cornered and physically hurt on the schoolyard? She fights back with technology
Being bullied can be physically and emotionally devastating, which is probably why a nine-year-old girl from Shillong developed an app to tackle school bullies. After being bullied on frequent occasions, Meaidaibahun Majaw, a fourth grade student, decided to take matters into her own hands. Her solution? Developing an app that reports events of bullying and harassment. Majaw stated that the app will allow the victims to anonymously notify school officials, teachers and parents about the incidents, and also reveal the name of the bully. The app is set to hit the Google Play Store soon. Scroll ahead for all the details of this new development.
“I experienced bullying in school since nursery. It affected me. I hated it so much that I was always on the lookout for a solution. No other child should have to go through the same,” Majaw told the media. “When I was in class two, the last time I was bullied, a group of students overpowered me and one of them stamped on my feet,” she revealed in an interview to a leading daily. “She was badly affected due to repeated incidents of bullying,” confirmed her mother, Dasumarlin Majaw. “After her school took steps, my daughter started performing well. It’s my appeal to every institution to deal with incidents of bullying with the utmost care, without neglect. I would also like to request young children not to bully others.”
Majaw plans to enter her app in the White Hat Junior challenge, for which she got selected back in September 2019. If her app gets selected, she could win a trip to Silicon Valley to show her creation to investors. “A total of 15 students were selected in the White Hat Junior challenge, the final round of which will be conducted in May in Silicon Valley, United States. We are quite confident that her project to challenge this societal disorder will win the global challenge, and she will get scholarships to travel to Silicon Valley,” said Majaw’s mother.
