A killer who stabbed a mum in the chest and throat then left her in a pool of blood for her twin daughters to discover has begged for a lenient sentence.

Scott Alan Murdoch, 42, stabbed Kylie Blackwood, 42, multiple times in her Pakenham home, south-east of Melbourne, on August 1, 2013.

The woman's 11-year-old daughters found her stabbed and dying on the couch after walking home from school.

In Murdoch's sentencing submission hearing at the Supreme Court of Victoria on Wednesday, a letter read by his lawyer Jim Shaw on his behalf said, 'I hate myself for what has gone on', ABC reported.

'I know I've destroyed her [Ms Blackwood's] husband and kids' life. I'm sorry.'

The prosecution lawyer argued for a life sentence in prison without parole.

But Mr Shaw said Murdoch's guilty plea saved the dead woman's daughters from having to give evidence and that should reduce the sentence.

He also claimed the trial could have lasted for two months with 100 witnesses had Murdoch pleaded not guilty.

It comes just days after Mrs Blackwood's daughters gave emotional victim impact statements.

'After doing something like that, how could you call yourself a human being?,' one daughter said in the statement, as reported by The Herald Sun.

'I hope you suffer and get what's coming to you. My mother deserves justice,' she said.

Her sister said the discovery of her mother's body still haunts her.

'The trauma, the grief will never leave me. My mother never deserved this,' she said.

One daughter said she still has terrible nightmares about what happened to her mother.

The now 17-year-old remembered her mother as a 'beautiful woman' and said it was unfair she has to live without her for the rest of her life.

The hearing continues.
