COIMBATORE: A 30-year-old woman, who broke into her relative’s house near Sowdamman Kovil Lane at Town Hall in the city and decamped with 75 sovereigns gold ornaments, was arrested on Tuesday.
The Ukkadam (crime) police have recovered all the stolen ornaments from the accused, Chandini alias Mubina, 30, wife of Babu, of Madheena Nagar at Kovaipudur.
According to police, the gold ornaments were stolen from the house of Muneera Begum, of VG Complex near Sowdamman Kovil Lane at Town Hall.
On Monday morning, Muneera Begum locked her house and went to a hospital to take care of her mother-in-law after her husband, son and daughter-in-law had left for their work.
When she returned home around 6.30pm, she found the front door of the house was broken open and that gold ornaments, which were kept in an almirah, were missing.
Muneera Begum immediately informed the Ukkadam police, who registered a case under sections 380 and 454 of the Indian Penal Code.
Preliminary inquiry by Ukkadam police inspector Amudha revealed that Mubina is a relative of Muneera Begum. Mubina stole the ornaments as she was in dire need of Rs 2 lakh to repay her loan amount to some people.
“We checked the CCTV cameras in the area and found Mubina crossing the area with a small bag. Half an hour later, she was returning from the area with the bag fully packed. We picked her for interrogation on Tuesday and she confessed to the crime,” a police officer said.
