PUNE: A couple, who went to the
Khadakwasla canal for a bath on Tuesday morning, drowned after being swept away by the strong currents.
The Sinhagad police identified the deceased as
Reshma Chavan (35) and her husband
Kailash Rajendra Chavan (38) from Kondhwa-Dhawade on NDA Road.
Police said the couple informed their family members that they were going to the canal near
Nanded Phata for a bath. They reached the spot on their individual bikes one after the other around 9am.
Investigation officer
Rustum Shaikh from Sinhagad police told TOI, “Kailash first stepped into the water and was immediately swept away by the strong currents. Seeing him drifting away, his wife, Reshma, tried to catch him, but she, too, fell into the water.”
“Their bodies were recovered by the PMRDA’s fire brigade from Dhayari, around 7km from the incident spot, around 10am. The firemen and beat marshals rushed to the spot after passersby informed the city police control room,” Shaikh said.
The Sassoon General Hospital in its advance post-mortem report certified the cause of the couple’s death due to drowning.
Reshma was a music teacher and Kailash used to run a spectacle shop. They have a four-year-old daughter.
A complaint of accidental death was registered with the Sinhagad police under section 173 of the Code of Criminal Procedure Code. The case will be transferred to the Haveli police in Pune rural for investigation, he added.
Inspector
Ashok Shelke from the Haveli police told TOI, “We have seized two vehicles, a mobile phone and the clothes worn by Kailash from the banks of the canal.”
“Eyewitnesses told police that the couple was swept away by the gushing waters,” he said.
