NEW DELHI: Around 85
fishermen stuck in
Iran after the country imposed travel curbs in the wake of the rapid spread of Covid-19 have sent a fresh SOS to the government seeking basic supplies. Of around 1,000 Indians stranded in Iran, 85 are reportedly from
Kerala and all are fishermen. They had opted to work in Iran after cyclone Ockhi in December 2017.
With the imposition of travel restrictions, they are trapped inside their accommodations. “After we sought
help narrating our predicament here, the
sponsor is now threatening us that we wouldn’t be allowed to go back unless we pay him the money we owed him for the visa,” said a video message sent on Monday by a fisherman. The sponsor has also threatened to cut supply of essential items, the message said.
