VELLORE: The Walajapet police in Ranipet district have launched a search for a 40-year-old
murder accused man who escaped from
police custody while being taken to
Vellore Central Prison on a
Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus, after being produced before the Chengelpet magistrate court.
The police have formed five special teams to nab Venkatesan alias Sengadu Venkatesan of Sengadu near Walajapet. He was involved in more than 25 cases, including murder and robbery, in Walajapet and Kancheepuram.
The police said constables Raja and Pushparani from Kancheepuram armed reserve wing were escorting Venkatesan back to Vellore Central Prison in a TNSTC bus from the court at Chengelpet around 11pm. The accused, who was sitting close to the door of the bus and was not handcuffed, got out of the moving vehicle when it was crossing an overbridge on the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway close to Chennasamudram toll gate near Walajapet.
Though the cops chased Venkatesan, he managed to escape. The constables lodged a complaint with Walajapet police. Police said departmental action would be taken against the constables if they were found guilty.
